Food pantry helps community | News, Sports, Jobs – Marietta Times

The Newport Community Food Pantry does a brisk business, serving between 120 and 125 households a month.

“We serve over 300 people,” Assistant Manager Christina Turner said.

The pantry is open 8 to 11 a.m. third Saturdays of the month and 4 to 6 p.m. the following Monday. Box pickup is by appointment only by calling 740-473-2900. A message should be left with a name and phone number.

The pantry has served the residents of Newport for 30 years and is at the back of the Baptist Church parking lot, Turner said.

The pantry follows Ohio income requirements as it receives food from the Logan Food Bank, she said.

As with most food pantries, boxes are packed so clients get a variety of food, such as canned meat, vegetables, fruits and cereal.

“We also make sure they get frozen meats and vegetables when they are available,” Turner said. “We’ve gotten donations of fresh fruit.”

Along with the food pantry, Kay’s Closet is open at the Methodist Church on the third Thursday. It has a drive-through where household cleaning products are distributed.

Zack Farnsworth has volunteered at the pantry since he was in eighth grade. His mother is the manager and his family has volunteered for several years, he said.

It feels good to help others in the community, Farnsworth said.

“We have a small inner town, but we meet and grow relationships with the people outside,” he said. “We really do get to know these people. We almost get to be friends.”
